History of the House
Omodakaya stands quietly in Okute, Mizunami City, Gifu.
During the Edo period, this town prospered as the forty-seventh post station along the Nakasendō,
one of the Five Great Routes connecting Edo and Kyoto.
This house, too, has gathered time within that long current of history.
Known today as the “Samurai Road,” and featured on British television,
this historic trail now welcomes travelers from around the world who come in search of its quiet beauty.
Along this path, Omodakaya remains—still and unhurried.
Over two hundred years old,
this house has silently witnessed both the turbulent history of the post town and the unchanging passage of the four seasons.
面髙屋が佇むのは、岐阜県瑞浪市にある大湫町。
ここは江戸時代、五街道のひとつ「中山道」の
江戸から数えて四十七番目の宿場町として栄えました。
この家もまた、その歴史の流れの中で時を重ねてきました。
「サムライロード」としてイギリスのテレビ番組でも紹介され、
今、世界中の旅人がその美しさを求めて歩を運ぶこの街道に、
面髙屋（おもだかや）は静かに佇んでいます。
築二百年。
この家は、宿場町が刻んできた激動の歴史と、
変わることのない四季の移ろいを、ただ静かに見守ってきました。

What Omodakaya akira has done
is a restoration that carries this house into the future,
without disturbing the quiet “breath” nurtured through long years of time.
While gently weaving in modern comforts,
the deep, crystal-clear stillness this house has long embraced remains untouched.
Walk the stone-paved road that leads toward Magome-juku,
and enjoy a peaceful night—
perhaps the very kind once dreamed of by the samurai.

Akira Tsujinaka
From the ancient capital of Kyoto,

At the age of sixty, he encountered this place,
and in a traditional house quietly nearing the end of its time,
found his own calling:
to carry it forward for the next generation.
He may not speak English well,
but believes there is a warmth that reaches beyond words.

辻中 明 古都・京都から大湫宿へ。
六十歳でこの地に出会い、
静かに朽ちゆこうとする古民家に、
「次世代へ繋ぐ」という自らの使命を見つけました。
英語は苦手ですが、言葉を超えた心がある。
「おかえりなさい」の心で。
